Each year, more than 200,000 U.S. children go to hospital emergency rooms with injuries associated with playgrounds. Most injuries occur when a child falls to the ground from a piece of playground equipment. Many injuries can be prevented by providing a protective ground covering and mulch is one of the accepted products to help cushion the fall. Yard Works has a wide variety of mulches, including Soft One and Playground Chips, both of which are often used in playgrounds around the country.

Make your playground a safer place to play!
Make sure surfaces around playground equipment have at least 12 inches of mulch, wood chips, sand or pea gravels.
Make sure play structures more than 30 inches high are spaced at least 9 feet apart.
Check for dangerous hardware like open “s” hooks or protruding bolt ends.
Check for sharp points or edges on equipment.
Carefully supervise children on playgrounds to make sure they’re safe.
Check regularly to see that the equipment is in good condition.
These recommendations have been provided by the Playground Safety Board.
Soft One is a Certified Engineered Wood Fiber that will help reduce impact of a fall. Soft One meets the American Standard for Testing and Material (ASTM) Specification for the Impact Attenuation and Wheelchair Accessible as required by the American Disability Act (ADA). Soft One can help protect children from injury while enhancing the appearance of the playground. This product meets all IPEMA certifications.
Yard Works also offers non-certified Playground Chips. Playground Chips are less expensive, made from all-natural, debarked hardwood logs. The chips are dust free, may vary in size and won’t stick to clothing like other mulches. When installed at the suggested depth, Playground Chips provide a shock absorbing surface which can help reduce the chance of injury on a playground.
